Paper Roll Animals
(toilet paper rolls)
You will need:
- toilet paper rolls for each
child
- an exacto knife
or darning needle (adults only please)
- popsicle sticks or toothpicks
for legs and necks for each child
- crayons, paint, water-based
markers
- yarn, rolly eyes, cardboard
from chip and/or cereal boxes
- cotton batting, fun fur, paper,
etc. for covering bodies
- scissors and hole punch
What to do:
- for animals with popsicle
stick legs, the procedure is virtually the same
- pre-poke 4 slits in the paper
rolls for the popsicle sticks to be inserted into later on for the legs
- use the exacto knife ADULTS
ONLY PLEASE
- if using toothpicks, pre-poke
holes with a darning needle
- if a long neck is to be used,
ie. in horses, giraffes, cows, etc. turn the roll and make one more slit
in the opposite side from the leg holes so that a popsicle stick may be
inserted later for the neck
- sticks may be broken in half
for shorter legs and necks
- a hole punch may be used to
make a hole at the other end of the roll so that children may attach a
tail later on
- it is easier for younger children
to simply tape the tail on rather than trying to tie it or twist it on
- if a particular head and neck
shape is desired, pre-draw it on pieces of cardboard from chip boxes or
cereal boxes ready for children to cut out or pre-cut them out for them
- when all the necessary pieces
for the animals are cut out, they are ready for assembly
- then comes the decorating
of the body by use of crayons, fabric scraps, paint, etc. followed by
the addition of a tail if necessary
- legs are usually first followed
by head and necks
- some ideas for tails include
twist ties, pipe cleaners, yarn, paper, string
- label work and clean up
