You will need:
- a medium to
large-sized play space
- masking tape
to mark start and finish lines
- a bean bag
for each child
What to do:
- tell children
they are all going to be beetles in a race
- encourage
children to liine up at the starting line on all fours
- show them
where the finish line is
- encourage
children to try and get to the finish line before you count to ten
- count out
loud slowly so that all children make it to the finish line in time
- line up again
at start line
- tell them
you want them to count how many ‘beetle steps’ it takes them to get
to the finish line
- next they
are all crazy beetles that like to race backwards!
- have them
line up and race to the finish line backwards
- make sure
they have lots of space so as not to crash into each other
- then line
children up at start line and encourage each child to use a bean bag
as their ‘jewel’ spot on their back
- again encourage
them to race to the finish line and not to lose their spot off their
back!
- in any race,
try not to focus on one winner - rather try and gear the races to
bettering one's own score or ability
