2 sheets
of pink or red paper for each child (good one
side only works just fine - ie. old photo-copies)
glue (mucilage
or white or glue sticks)
a hand-held hole
punch
yarn to hang the
finished pomanders by
children's craft
scissors
a pencil for each
child
a bottle of spray
perfume or scented hair spray
What to do:
tell children
that they will be making a hanging heart that smells pretty
you may wish to
show them a finished one, but be careful not to have your sample too elaborate
or too perfect!
explain that the
hearts are made much the same way as doilies
fold both sheets
of paper in half together and then in half again
find the side
that is all fold
encourage children
to draw an 'ear' on the fold (or 1/2 of a heart)
then children
will carefully cut out the 'ear' shape
when finished,
children may then cut shapes on the fold as they have done for doilies
and snowflakes
when designs are
complete, children are ready to join the 'ears'
separate all the
'ears' and open them to view each heart shape
then get the children
to fold each heart back in half and place them in the same direction in
front of themselves
take one folded
heart and daub glue onto the top side or 'ear' of it
carefully match
another 'ear' of the next heart on top and press
apply glue to
the top side or 'ear' of that heart and proceed to match the next 1/2
heart as before and so on until all hearts are glued together
to glue the last
'ear' on top to the 'ear' on the bottom of the pile, have children put
glue on the top 'ear' as before, then carefullly bring bottom ear around
to meet the top ear and press firmly
punch a hole through
the top of at least two of the hearts near the centre of the pomander
(you may need to do this for younger children)
tie a length of
yarn through the hole
spray the pomander
with perfume or hair spray (ADULTS ONLY PLEASE)
