You will need:
1/2 a toilet roll for each child
cotton balls
(6 or 7 for each child)
assorted bright colors of tempera powder paint
plastic bags
(to dye Easter chicks in)
1/2 pipe cleaner per child
children's craft scissors
white glue
yellow construction paper
(for the chick's head)
pencil or crayon
darning needle
masking tape
(2" pieces on wax paper)
newspaper
What to do:
pre-poke two leg holes in each toilet roll using the darning needle
pre-cut out chick's head from yellow construction paper
cut a slit in the back section of chick's head so that children can slip it onto the toilet paper roll later
cut a slit on one edge of the toilet roll to allow for the head
(make sure it's on the side opposite the leg holes)
cut pipe cleaner pieces in half again
(1/.4 pipe cleaner = 1 leg)
tell children they are going to create an Easter chick
pass out toilet roll bodies and pipe cleaner legs
encourage children to find leg holes and poke the legs in
pass out heads and encourage children to draw eyes on their chicks
tell children to notice the slit at the back of their chick's head
encourage them to find another matching slit on their toilet roll
slide the two together until they interlock
next children glue 'pulled apart' cotton balls over their chick's body making the chick all fluffy
let children choose which color of powder paint they would like for their chicks
let children shake their chicks in the bag of color they choose
show them how to hold the bag shut while shaking -twist end shut
let children remove chicks from dye and shake off excess paint
encourage children to print their names on a strip of masking tape
peel tape off wax paper and wrap around chick's leg
(like putting a leg band on a real bird)
place chick on newspaper
clean up
