TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION

Weather:

seasonal changes, clouds, lightening, thunder, hail, height of the sun in the sky, length of shadows, amount of daylight, etc.

Plants:

changes in tree, buds, leaves, sap, different seeds, how things grow, fruit-bearing trees, etc.

Animals:

birds, nests, eggs, food, babies, ducks, ponds, fish, etc.

Environment:

water, land, air, pollution, litter, importance of balance in nature, etc.

SETTING THE MOOD

Books:

stories of seasons, storms, adventures in rainstorms, books on nature, gardening magazines with pictures of flowers and trees encyclopedia of trees, children’s nature magazines (ie. Ranger Rick)

Displays:

set up display boards of pictures of local plants and trees; bring in a bouquet of pussy willows and set them in a jar of water to look at up close; set up a magnifying glass with assorted seeds to view up close, place radish seeds on moist paper towel and let children see them sprout overnight!; cut the tops off carrots and set in a saucer of water and watch them sprout; make a flannel board with figures and assorted clothing for the day ie. rainwear, snowgear, etc.

Posters:

local flora and fauna, ‘DO NOT LITTER’ posters, ducks, ponds, blossoming trees, sunny meadows, etc.

Videos/ Speakers/ Trips:

bring in local flora and fauna experts; take a walk around the block and collect litter; collect pondwater in a jar and observe the life teeming in it; visit the local nature sanctuaries; have an avid gardener share their gardening tips with the children.
