You will need:
- 1/2 of a toilet
roll for each child
- a darning
needle
- manilla tag
or old file folders for the bird heads
- 1/2 of a pipe
cleaner for each child for the bird’s legs
- a small colored
feather for each child
- 1 cupcake
paper per child
- some easter
hay (shredded newspaper could also be used)
- crayons
- children’s
craft scissors
What to do:
- pre-cut the
toilet rolls in half
- using the
darning needle, pre-poke two leg holes in each roll
- turn the roll
over and pre-poke one hole near one end of the roll to allow for the
insertion of the feather tail later on
- on the same
side as the tail hole but at the opposite end of the roll, cut a small
slit in the toilet roll to allow for the insertion of the bird’s head
later on
- pre-draw the
bird heads on manilla tag or file folder and either cut them out or
encourage children to do this for themselves
- cut a small
slit at the back of the head so that children can slip it into the
matching slit in the toilet roll later on
- cut pipe cleaner
pieces in half again (1/4 pipe cleaner = 1 leg)
- tell children
they are going to create a little bird
- pass out toilet
roll bodies and pipe cleaner legs
- encourage
children to find leg holes and poke the legs in
- pass out heads
and encourage children to draw on eyes
- tell children
to notic the slit at the back of their bird’s head
- encourage
them to match this with the slit with a similar one on their roll
- slide the
two together until they interlock
- next the children
should color their bird’s body
- lastly, they
can be given the feather for their bird’s tail
- encourage
them to find a little hole on their roll that they can poke it into
(leave the feathers for last or they will be so intrigued by the
feathers that they will not make their crafts!)
- next pass
out the cupcake papers and tell the children they are going to make
a little nest for their bird to sit on
- let each child
place some easter hay or shredded newspaper into their cupcake paper
- bend the bird’s
legs slightly so that the bird can rest on top of it’s nest
- label work
- clean up
